Why EV wheel load ratings are higher — and how to specify for them
Battery packs change the loads a wheel carries. A guide to why EV fitments need higher ratings, and what to tell a supplier to get a correct quote.
Electric vehicles place more weight over each axle than the combustion cars they are based on, and they do it in an unusual distribution.
The weight is not evenly spread
A typical battery pack is a flat, dense slab mounted low in the floor.
Total corner load is higher. A large pack in the floorpan means more mass on every corner than the equivalent combustion platform, which carries its fuel as a small tank at the rear.
The distribution is unusual. The mass sits between the axles and low, so the front and rear loads are not the familiar front-heavy or rear-heavy pattern. Both axles carry close to their nominal share.
Why the rating matters more
The load rating on a wheel is a structural number: the maximum mass the wheel is certified to carry at its rated speed, in a specific configuration, in a specific test condition. If a wheel is used above its rating, the failure mode is not dramatic. It is gradual — a slow fatigue crack that grows over months of service, often with no visible symptom until it is significant.
What to specify
- Vehicle and year, or the OE part number. This is the fastest route to the correct rating.
- Maximum gross vehicle weight if you have it, and the axle loads if available.
- Tyre specification. The load index of the tyre caps the assembly.
- ET and clearance, which differ from the combustion version of the same platform more often than people expect.
Aero is now a design constraint
Range is a visible selling point, so aerodynamic drag is no longer a styling afterthought. A forged wheel is a good candidate for an aero-optimised face, because the process allows a closed-face design with a defined edge profile to be machined without excessive weight penalty.
The trade-off is real: a closed face reduces brake cooling. For a performance EV that is driven hard, we recommend a semi-closed design.
One detail that catches people out
Wheel bolts on EV platforms are frequently a different length and thread from the combustion version, and sometimes a different seating face. Bolts are a structural element here — they locate the wheel against the hub and carry the shear load from cornering.
If you send us the vehicle and year, we will confirm the complete fitment — wheel, bolts, spacers if any, and the load rating — before you commit to an order.
